Winning Weekend for Marist Hockey

Marist College’s Club Ice Hockey team emerged victorious when they beat both Siena College and Central Connecticut State University this weekend.

The Marist Red Foxes hosted the Siena Saints at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center on Friday night at 9:15 p.m. The first period, which was relatively uneventful, concluded with Siena leading 1-0. However, halfway through the second period, junior defenseman Vinny Masters tied the game with a goal off a great pass by sophomore Conor Flynn. Senior Michael Donato then scored, making the game 2-1 and helping Marist take a one goal lead going into the third period. The score was still 2-1 with less than fifteen minutes left, until sophomore defenseman Dan Roberts scored with the help of captain Austin King, making the score 3-1. Siena struck back, making the score 3-2, and then netting another goal shortly after to tie, 3-3. The Red Foxes persisted, however, and junior Connor DiTomaso scored the game winning goal with just minutes left in the final period. Marist successfully beat Siena 4-3 at home. The game was a great display of the Red Foxes’ consistent effort. Senior captain Justin Larkin, the goaltender in the game, made numerous outstanding saves to help Marist get the win.

Marist Hockey then hit the road to take on the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils Saturday night at the Newington Ice Arena in Newington, Connecticut. Forward Seamus O’Rourke made it 1-0 in the first period, then CCSU struck back immediately with a power play goal, and tied the game 1-1 with 6:57 left in the first period. CCSU went on the power play again and scored with 25 seconds left in the first, and the period concluded with Marist trailing by one goal. O’Rourke scored his second goal of the game in the second period and tied it 2-2, and with only 50 seconds left in the second period, Dan Roberts scored and gave Marist a one goal lead going into the third period. Marist solidified their lead when sophomore Kenny Nygaard scored his first goal of the season and made it 4-2. The Red Foxes emerged triumphant from this contest as well.

This weekend, Marist takes on New York University on Friday, December 9 at 8:30 p.m. at the Sky Rink in New York City. The Red Foxes then return home to play Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, December 10.
