Marist Hockey Falls to End Semester
Marist finished the fall semester with a pair of games this past weekend On Friday night, the team hit the road to compete against New York University, and then hosted Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center the next day.
The Marist College Red Foxes faced off against the New York University Violets Friday at the Chelsea Piers Sky Rinks in Manhattan. The Violets struck first and netted a goal with 16:50 left in the first period. Marist struck back when junior Connor DiTomaso scored, with assists from alternate captain Andy Vovk and sophomore Kenny Nygaard. However, with 2:52 left in the first period, NYU scored again and got the lead going into the second period. In the middle of the third period, NYU scored and made it 3-1, but with 47.6 seconds left on the clock in the third period, captain Austin King made the score 3-2. Marist was unable to tie the game, so the Red Foxes fell 3-2 to the Violets.
For the next game, Marist had the home ice advantage when the team took on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center. The first period was relatively uneventful until Nygaard got his second point for the weekend with a goal. The third period opened with sophomore Conor Flynn scoring a goal and making it 2-0. RPI struck back with 17:02 left in the third period and slashed Marist’s lead in half, 2-1. RPI scored again and tied the score at two, taking the game into overtime. Despite strong efforts from the Red Foxes, fell 3-2 to RPI in an overtime loss.
Marist will continue its season in the spring by taking on Rensselaer once again, this time in Troy, New York, on January 20, 2017 for the first game after the winter break. The team will then return home the next day to face off against Wagner University at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie.↑ Back to top
